
Summer Reading Challenge 2016
The Big Friendly Read – how it works
The Big Friendly Read will run from Saturday 9th July to Saturday 3rd September for children aged 3-12 years. Visit the library 3 times during the summer and read or listen to 6 library books, ebooks or eaudio to complete The Big Friendly Read Reading Challenge.
First visit
- Ask a member of staff or volunteer for a registration card to fill in.
- You will receive your Big Friendly Read fold-up wallet to bring to the library on each visit and two limited edition Quentin Blake collector cards for joining the challenge.
- Find 10 Big Friendly Read characters around the library.
- Borrow at least 3 books.
- When you have read 3 books write the details on your wallet.
Second visit
- Remember to bring your wallet with you.
- Return your books to receive two more collector cards to add to your
Big Friendly Read wallet.
- You will also be rewarded with a pair of Big Friendly Read rainbow glasses.
- Borrow at least 3 books.
- When you have read 3 books write the details on your wallet.
Third visit
- Remember to bring your wallet with you.
- Return your books to receive two more collector cards and your very own
Big Friendly Read medal and certificate!
- Tell all your friends about The Big Friendly Read reading challenge and don’t forget to keep reading over the summer!
Keep your Big Friendly Read wallet safe as you can also use it for free entry to Bosworth Battlefield, the 1620s House & Garden at Donington-le-Heath Manor House and The Roald Dahl Museum in Aylesbury for children taking part (one free child per one paying adult). See website for details.

Christmas at the Manor

Discover how Christmas was celebrated in times gone by! The 1620s House & Garden will be beautifully dressed in Jacobean style decor. See how preparations were made to celebrate the full twelve days of Christmas by the Digby Family.
Join in with festive carols and a mummers play, talk to costumed volunteers about food and feasting, Christmas customs, keeping warm in winter in the days before central heating and all the jobs that had to be done to ensure the holy season ran smoothly.
What’s more, there’ll be festive crafts in the barn and a children’s trail to enjoy!
Normal Admission plus £2. No need to pre-book, just come along on the day.

Wednesday 13th December, 5:00 pm - 8:30 pm
