Novelist and academic Dr Sara Read will describe women’s experiences of childbirth in the 1600s. We will find out what objects would be brought into the birthing chamber and how the midwife would use them. Who was in the room with the labouring woman and her midwife? Why would a midwife send out to the butcher for a still warm hare skin? We’ll find out at this fascinating talk.
Sara will then explain about how her research into childbirth in the 1600s fed into her novel The Gossips’ Choice and helped to inform the character of its fictional midwife Lucie Smith.
