Leicester Morrismen -'Celebrating 70 years of dancing'

There will be 2 dance sessions held between 10.30 and 11.30am

LEICESTER MORRISMEN are seventy years old and still as enthusiastic as when they started in 1953. They just love to perform the traditional dances, put a smile on people’s faces, and raise thousands of pounds for charity. With clashing sticks and waving hankies, the Morris is a colourful sight, so bring your cameras!

What’s it all about? Truly, nobody knows as it’s such an ancient tradition that its origins are long lost. We do know there were Morris dancers in Leicester in the days of the 1620s House because they appear in the court records in 1599 and 1603 – it seems they danced in the wrong place at the wrong time and upset the local bigwigs! These days they try to stay out of trouble and are planning to dance all over Leicestershire to celebrate their Platinum Jubilee.
