Dolphin Morris Dancing and Mummers Play

Sunday 2nd June, 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm.

Dolphin Morris Dancing and Mummers Play

Dolphin Morris are a South Nottinghamshire based Cotswold Morris based team. who will be bringing their colourful dancing to the 1620s site for the afternoon.

As well as a range of traditional dances accompanied by their own musicians, the Dolphin team will treat us to the performance of a specially written mummers play set in the  village of Bradmore where a Morris-related legal incident occurred in 1618.

The Bradmore incident involved several members of the local dancers and two local musicians being arrested for dancing on the Sabbath. The two musicians were excommunicated for their crime by the Puritanical members of the local church authorities. A plaque commemorates the incident on a house wall in the village.

The short mummer-style play suggests a comical version of what could have led to the incident, while giving us a great insight in to the thoughts of the time as well as naming the real people involved. This is a great bit of entertaining social history, wrapped up in fine traditional style.

There will be two sets of dancing and the play between 2pm and 4pm.

Normal admission applies.
