The Lachrimae Consort return to perform an enchanting evening of early music celebrating the extraordinary life and music of John Dowland, the greatest lutenist and song-writer of the Elizabethan age in the barn.
The lute was the iconic instrument of Elizabethan times and the greatest of all players was John Dowland – famed throughout Europe but spurned at the English court because of his religion. The Queen called him “a man to serve any prince in the world – but an obstinate papist!” His songs are amongst the finest ever written in English, and his instrumental compositions range from dolorous pavanes to foot-tapping galliards.
His fascinating story is narrated by actor John Seeley. Dowland’s music and songs are performed by the Lachrimae Consort with instruments of the time
