The Well Yard

The yard was where the house’s water supply was located. Water would have to be drawn from the well during the day for the house, animals and gardens. It would be stored in buckets and pails. Some of the water would have been warmed on the fires for washing and cooking. The two doors into the yard would have been busy places full of comings and goings, with shouted instructions, shared gossip and even flirtations.
