The English Civil War in Leicestershire and Rutland- Talk

Summary

The First English Civil War (1642-5) split families and led, ultimately, to the execution of King Charles I. There were a number of skirmishes around Leicestershire and Rutland and the Siege of Leicester, while the Battle of Naseby was fought in North Northamptonshire close to Market Harborough. Leicester was a Parliamentary stronghold, under Thomas Grey, while Ashby was the Royalist centre, led by Henry Hastings.

Join Archaeologist Peter Liddle as he explores the impact which this tumultuous time had on the areas of Leicestershire and Rutland.
