The Lobby

The main, formal entrance to the house in the 1620s would have been the arched doorway ahead of you. The family and guests would have used an outside staircase (now removed) from the garden. This would be the first room that they entered. The servants used the ground floor doors.

The room has all of the things that you would expect to see in an entrance to a large house of this period; hooks and places for outdoor clothes, storage for Mr Digby’s armour and weapons and a settle to sit on while servants removed newcomer’s outdoor boots or to sit on and while the groom prepared horses for a journey. The family’s dog may also have slept here.

Originally this room had a ceiling at the height of the big roof beams. The household servants, William and Mary Carter, would have slept in the attic above, reaching it by a ladder in the corner of the lobby.
